Barbara Jean Jones was born on December 27, 1941 to Walter and Elvena Johnson in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended the Duval County Public Schools, graduating from Stanton High School. Barbara worked for the Duval County Public School System and retired after 30 years of service. Barbara was a friendly outgoing person with a great sense of humor and a love for music and dancing.
Barbara later met and married Morris Zake Jones Sr. in Jacksonville, Florida, from this union a son, Morris Zake Jones Jr.; daughters, Gail Hollis, Shanitta Jones; stepdaughters, Carol Brady and Teryl Wilson were born.
Barbara confessed Christ at an early age, she was a member of Abyssinia Baptist Church where she served as a member of District 15 under the leadership of Deacon Calvin Wright. Barbara was also a member of the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class #1 with Ms. Doretha Brown, teacher. She was a volunteer for MCCI, in addition, she was over-all a great mother, grandmother, devoted wife and loving daughter and sister.
Barbara departed this life peacefully on February 27, 2018 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Zake Jones Sr.; parents, Walter and Elvena Johnson; brother, Walter Johnson Jr.; sister-in-laws, Nola Jean Johnson and Margaret Mendheim.
Barbara is survived by her children, Gail Hollis, Morris Jones, Jr. and Shanitta Jones; siblings, Clementine Sallins, Delores Burns, Eugene Mendhiem, Theresa Pringle (Carlton), Darlene Jones (Jimmie), and Sharon Moore; grandchildren, Brandy Hollis, Sheekeenah Hollis, Darryl Hollis, Chanell White, JaShawn Hooks, KeyShawn Hooks (Alexis), Cedrick Conner, Derrick Conner, Eric Simmons, Shatia Brown, KenShayla Brown, Cheryl Wilson, and Teriyah Evans; great-grandchildren, Inesha Bonsell, Asi’Yon Brinson, A’shia Brinson, Ju’Kyi Jones, Christopher Powell, Leonard Andrews, and Khy’Aris Hooks; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
The funeral service for Barbara Jean Jones will be held 10:00 AM Friday, March 9th, 2018 at Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church 10325 Interstate Center Drive.
