Obituary for Vera Jane Monroe

Vera Jane Monroe
Minister Vera Jane Hayes Monroe, affectionally known as “V” and MOM Monroe, was born November 30, 1931 in Green Cove Springs, Florida to the late Simon and Mary Jane Hayes. Her family later moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she attended the local public schools of Duval County, graduating from Old Stanton High School in 1950. She furthered her education at Florida Junior College at Jacksonville and earned her certification as a Nurse Assistant. During her mid-teens, MOM Monroe discovered her passion for music when she heard her friend’s mother playing the piano. She took piano lessons and was soon playing for church choirs within the city. It was also during that time when she met Prince Lorenzo A. Monroe, Sr., the man of her dreams. After a brief courtship, they were joined together in holy matrimony, and from that union seven children were born; one preceded them in death. MOM Monroe and Prince Monroe were married for over 48 years, until his demise in November 1998.

MOM Monroe became a member of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ in the early 1960’s. She served as back-up musician under the tutelage of Min. Willie Joe Hall, where she was introduced to and fell in love with “shoutin’ music”. MOM Monroe soon moved on to playing the organ and directing the choir. Shortly after, her husband was called into the ministry as Shepherd in Live Oak, FL for a short time and for 28 years in Jacksonville, FL until his demise. Throughout that time, MOM Monroe served untiringly as First Lady; leading by example, supporting the mission of the church, and upholding the standards of holiness. She continued to serve as church organist and blessed the congregation each Sunday with her angelic voice and jazzy style of playing. One of her proudest moments was in the mid 1970’s when she was elevated to the position of Minister of Music of the 13th Episcopal District (West, North & Central Florida) under the leadership of the late Apostle Hosea Lewis. She transformed the music department and introduced a sound that consisted of a mixture of traditional, contemporary, inspirational, and jazz music. Her love for God, music, people, and her strong belief in the power of music changed the atmosphere of praise for all who were in attendance. As a result, the District choir quickly grew to over 125 members. She retired in 1989.

MOM Monroe held several jobs: Church Musician, School Crossing Guard, and Supply Technician, but her greatest accomplishment was raising her family and being a good wife to her husband. After fighting a long good fight, MOM Monroe transitioned to eternal life on the afternoon of May 17, 2018. Although she will be truly missed by all who knew and admired her, her legacy will continue to live in the hearts of those who loved her. MOM Monroe is preceded in death by her husband, Prince Lorenzo A. Monroe, Sr., sisters – Whilemena Johnson and Thelma Williams, son – Gordon Hayes Monroe, and grandsons – Cody Williams and Juan Lawrence.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memories, her children - Presider Dr. Loranda Denson (Eld. Fred), Min. Lorenzo Monroe, Jr. (Eliana), Doreen Pooler (Julius), Joanne White, Vonceil Williams (Eld. Andrew) and Douglas Monroe, 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, one god-daughter, two honorary daughters and a host of relatives and friends.

Vera Monroe passed away Thursday, May 17th, 2018. Arrangements in Care of: Funerals by T.S. Warden, 904-765-1234
