Bessie was born into the union of Bishop Willie and Annabell Gordon on January 31, 1931 in Charleston, South Carolina. She was educated in Charleston County.

Bessie met and married Jack Colbert, for over 60 years their marriage was solid and binding until the Lord called him home; from this union fourteen children were born. Bessie and Jack moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1962. Bessie was always a housewife, she loved life and her family. She enjoyed cooking, she always had a pleasant demeanor wherever you met her.

Bessie departed this life on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Lanier Terrace Senior Nursing Facilities. Of Bessie’s thirteen siblings, eight of them: Mary, Almarie, Virginia, Leo, Johnny, Louis, Leroy and Edward have gone to eternal rest. Bessie had six children to precede her in death: Frank Brook, Bernard, Jack Jr., Mark S., Kimberly and Barbara Colbert.

Bessie leaves to cherish her memories, George Kelley, Bessie L. Days, Tommy G., Gary O., Roma C. Colbert, Donna F. Johnson, Barry Edwards, Angelo D. Colbert and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other family members and friends.

The funeral service for Bessie Brooks Colbert will be held 11AM, Thursday, October 18th, 2018 at the First Chronicles Baptist Church 2559 West 30th Street. The visitation will be 5- 7PM, Wednesday, October 17th, 2018 at the mortuary. Interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
